Since 2013, our Mumbai terminal, DP World Nhava Sheva, has taken its commitment to safety and the environment ‘beyond the gate’, engaging with families and communities to increase their awareness.
We don’t stop caring about the safety of our people and our local communities at the end of the working day – and the environment they live in matters to us, too. We wanted to find an effective way of sharing our knowledge and expertise more widely, and help create a safer and more sustainable society.
Our ‘Beyond the Gate’ initiative at Nhava Sheva is a series of regular events held in local communities, with participants including school children, housewives and the families of external truck drivers, as well as the families of DP World workers.
Managers and supervisors from the terminal deliver presentations on a range of topics covering everything from managing potential hazards to environmental stewardship. Focusing on inclusive discussions and hands-on demonstrations, Beyond the Gate means DP World’s expertise is shared with the families and communities who have a stake in our operations.
We’ve been delighted with the popularity of Beyond the Gate, both by the visible results it’s having in local communities, and also by the number of DP World people who’ve volunteered to get involved.
Between 2012-2015, we visited 12 local schools and engaged with more than 1,500 students. In the same period we also visited 10 local villages, meeting 650 housewives and other villagers.
We covered safety topics including road safety, disaster management and first aid. We also supported environmental efforts including saving water and energy, planting trees, launching a cleanliness drive and promoting the importance of reduce, reuse, recycle.
We supported our awareness-raising work with a series of specially prepared videos on the themes involving the families of our employees.
