Innovative technology has the potential to transform societies and people’s lives for the better. Through our Dubai Trade subsidiary, we’re nurturing the brightest and best young IT talent in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by supporting a prestigious national competition.
Future prosperity depends on innovation, creativity and fresh ideas, so supporting young graduates is key for developing societies. Dubai Trade, a subsidiary of DP World that facilitates trade through electronic services, were keen to support ground-breaking technology, showcase national creativity and to nurture young talent.
Since 2014, Dubai Trade have supported the national Software Development Tradeshow competition organized by the University of Wollongong in Dubai. The event is a platform where young computer engineers and computer science students present their projects to experts from academia and industry.
Entries are marked on their level of innovation and research, real-world applicability, integration of new technology and community benefit.
The opportunity of an internship with Dubai Trade is one of the incentives for winning entrants. The winning team also receives a free Certified Trade & Logistics Professional (CTLP) course from Dubai Trade, worth AED 3,500 (US$950).
Over 100 students from 10 universities across the UAE took part in the competition in 2015. Winning entries included:
• An invention which uses ultrasonic technology to help blind and partially sighted people to navigate effectively within their homes and the wider world.
• A remote medical monitoring system, which uses sensors to monitor a patient’s brainwaves and sends this information to a medical practitioner via a mobile device
• An app which uses audio fingerprinting, speech and handwriting recognition to help children with reading, writing and maths.
