Ten years ago when I started working in the container terminal business I learned what to do by shadowing my colleagues; picking up their skills – and faults – in a world of ‘we’ve always done it this way.’ I knew there had to be a better way but it wasn’t easy to challenge the status quo.
Fast forward a few years later and innovation has become the buzzword, to be smarter, faster, better in every process we do and every service we deliver!
When it came to our people, the challenge was not to tell them ‘be innovative,’ but to create an environment where our 36,000+ colleagues from around the world could collaborate, share ideas and brainstorm together, tapping into an immense pool of expertise to help achieve their objectives and solve their challenges. We also needed a platform where people could share their success stories and even volunteer to join a team of individuals sitting in different parts of the world who could build on an idea together.
This is how our innovation platform – innoGate – was born, giving everyone in DP World a voice and a tool that would make it easy for us to express ourselves regardless of language, job title, age or gender and to engage with our counterparts who share the same goals and face similar challenges.
We’ve solidified the initiative by empowering individuals who advocate innovation in every business unit in all of our regions. These ‘Champions’ ensure all ideas are considered and the right ones get implemented. It’s only been a couple of months since we started and there’s already over a thousand ideas and hundreds of success stories that encompass every aspect of our business.
Our people, the diversity of their skills and their values are our strongest asset; their collaboration is the key to our success.
